About the Lab
In 2015, our founder sat in an econometrics classroom at Michigan State University, learning the field’s golden rule: scrub the residual until it correlates with nothing else. ResLab exists because we started asking the opposite question: what if the noise is the signal? We call this the Credibility Revolution 2.0: instead of designing away human discretion to get a clean causal estimate, we design empirical research around it. We gain inspiration from Designing Endogeneity, our theoretical sister group, because they work out in theory what we chase in the data.
That requires two kinds of work. Access work secures records other researchers cannot reach. Data work uses econometrics to extract credible patterns from those records without washing away the discretion we want to study. ResLab brings the two together to build empirical designs around the frictions, exceptions, and human judgment that standard approaches often treat as noise.
